What is Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life-Force-Energy”. It is made up of two root words, “Rei” which means “Wisdom & Knowledge of the Universe” and “Ki”, which translates into “Life Force Energy”.
Reiki is a safe and gentle energy-based therapy that can easily be used on oneself and others to treat a variety of physical problems and emotional issues. As it is a holistic approach, Reiki also helps to harmonise your mind, body and spirit.
“Ki” is essentially the same as what we know as “Prana” in the Ayurvedic System or “Chi” in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Each of us has our own supply of “Ki”. It is this energy that maintains all our actions and sensations, and gives us what we call the “human touch”. It is this same “Ki” that is used for healing in a Reiki session.
How Reiki Works
What is the first instinctive thing that you do when you experience injury or pain? You may recall soothing and comforting the injured area with your hands immediately after getting hurt. This very simple action is a powerful testament of our innate healing power.
Reiki automatically begins to flow once a practitioner places his hands on or near an injury. The energy is drawn by the recipient’s injury to activate or enhance the natural healing processes
The following are some of the ways in which Reiki can enhance your physical, mental and emotional well-being.
Physical – Reiki helps to alleviate pain and give relief by enhancing and supporting your body’s innate ability to heal itself. In this process, the elimination of toxins through the appropriate channels is accelerated. It is not uncommon for clients to experience a fever or profuse urination after a Reiki session. This shows that the body is undergoing a detoxification. Reiki also works to harmonise and balance your energy body, so that you feel energised after a session.
Mental – Reiki facilities the building of strong thought processes. You may find that you are more willing to let go of certain negative thought patterns or attitudes after receiving Reiki. It also allows the release of built-up stress and tension by helping the body to relax. When Reiki flows into your consciousness, it fosters self-awareness, giving you better clarity about your personal potential and goals in life.
Emotional – Since Reiki is Universal Energy, it helps to promote positive qualities such as love, truth, faith and goodwill. It works on reducing negative emotions such as anger, self-criticism and pain. After a Reiki session, you may feel compelled to examine your negative attitude towards certain people or situations and will be more empowered to let go of it.
Can All of Us Become Reiki Practitioners?
Yes. All of us are born with the ability to heal. However, we must first be attuned to the energy by a certified Reiki Master. Attune in this context simply means “To bring into harmony”.
To ease understanding, think about how we attune our radios to pick up a channel frequency. In this case, it is the “antennae” at the crown of our head that needs to be brought into harmony with the energetic frequency of Reiki.
Reiki is not a religious practice and does not interfere with our personal beliefs. In fact, it compliments our own spiritual and religious practices very well. I know of Reiki Masters and practitioners who come from all religions and backgrounds.
